Not very well today. Palpitation of heart I think; been eating too much lately. Must diet myself.

Odd jobs about home and office.

Snowing all day.

FRIDAY 24th FEBRUARY 1888

Writing out report on Cottages at Boundary for Thacker and Cull.

Mr Mottram over from Waterhouses - had tea with us. Cannot settle Oakamoor valuation. Mr Lees will not have the hay at 10 tons and will not take it unless weighed. Mr Mottram says Mr Woodisse will not have it weighed so I told him then to do the best he could for his client as his decision on the part of Mr Lees was final.

If I could get out my machine for testing the weight of hay and get it accurate, such disputes could not occur.

THURSDAY 23rd FEBRUARY 1888

Morning - Various home work and in town on Beer Business.

Afternoon - To Woodhead Hall to see Mr S. Allen Esq and fixed on Thursday the 8 March for my lecture.

From Woodhead Hall to Dimmingsdale via High Shut. Charlesworth away so left note that Cull wanted to see him before 5 March as case comes on then.

The country is covered with snow and the East wind is piercingly cold today.

Dimmingsdale would be a grand and warm spot for a poultry farm and fish culture combined.

Home via Greeman Inn and Counslow Pot.

Evening - Put advert regarding lecture in press. Mr Thacker called at Walton Villa and left Rakeway specification with dad with verbal instructions to proceed. So I took it up to Williams and handed it over to him.

WEDNESDAY 22nd FEBRUARY 1888

Morning - Writing out a 2nd new specification for Rakeway Farm repairs for Thacker, in place of the one they lost, and took it to Cull.

Afternoon - To Boundary under instructions from Mr Cull to look over property belonging to Thorley for proposed sale.

Evening - To Walton Villa. Dad, they say, is not well again. Flushed. Dr Webb has been drawing his water for the last day or two. Poor old chap. I'm afraid it's a poor case with him unless he alters soon.

TUESDAY 21st FEBRUARY 1888

Afternoon - With Bert to see Hazlewall Sale. Deep snow on the ground.

Evening - My first sale of property at the Wheat Sheaf Hotel - for Hacker and Allen, Leek. Young Allen there and their head Clerk. Realised 126 pounds. Only about half a dozen people in the room. However, I managed to sell and I was glad I did, not only because this was my first sale of property but because my terms were, if sold 2 (unrecognisable word), if not not sold I go.

Afternoon - To Cull's office - says they have lost Rakeway specification so I shall have to write out a fresh one.

To Hanley after tea, walked to Blyth Bridge station and quite enjoyed the walk.

Evening - To Mechanics' Institute, Hanley to hear Mr Clough of London lecture on "Holland and her struggles for civil and religious liberty". Dissolving views - Curtain slide very effective. He is subsidised by Mr Robert Heath under whose auspices the lectures are held. Mr Clough used no pointer and so missed one point which would have made his lecture more interesting.

George Yates called on me after lecture and we walked to Hartshill together.

Notes:
1) George Yates (born 1871) was William's nephew, son of John's sister Ursula who lived in Hartshill. John probably stayed the night at his sister's house.
2) Thomas Bishop Cull (1854-1921) was a solicitor in Cheadle who lived at The Croft and worked at 2 High Street (Source: Edwardian and Great War Cheadle book)

TUESDAY 14th FEBRUARY 1888

Out on Beer Business and in Office, writing letters etc.

Very cold day and snow on ground.

Wrote to Mr G.H. Elam, Schoolmaster at Oakamoor, to say that I should postpone my lecture indefinitely - as I had found that it would noy pay me to lecture such small places.

MONDAY 13th FEBRUARY 1888

Office in Morning.

Will Hodgkiss left Cheadle today per 2:30 coach from Blyth Bridge. He leaves England for America in about a month.

In market etc.

THURSDAY 9th FEBRUARY 1888

Preparing things for lecture.

Evening - To Tean schools with Ursula, Mona, Bert, Will Hodgkiss, J. Lowndes, self and Payne - (number unreadable) of us.

But the school children spoilt it for everybody - there were about (number unreadable - it is 2 digits ending in 0) children and the noise they made was dreadful.

I will never have school children again along with the public. Their pennies amount to next to nothing and they are a nuisance - Experience.

There were very few grown-up people. In fact, altho there were nearly 100 children and people with them, the takings only amounted to about (word unreadable) what they did at Kingsley.

Altho I made myself hoarse with shouting the people could not hear me speak and consequently at the end of the lecture there was no clapping as at Kingsley.

WEDNESDAY 8th FEBRUARY 1888

In workshop helping Chadwick with reading stand.

Evening - Went through lecture sheets once more.

Mother is 70 years of age today. We had a little social gathering at Walton Villa - tea and supper there and Ursula came over from Hartshill

Notes:
1) John's mother Hannah Yardley was born in Horton, near Leek, in 1818.
2) John's sister Ursula was born in 1844 in Cheadle, Staffs. She married William Yates in 1867 (Ursula's sister Sarah Ann married William's brother John Yates). In 1881, John and Ursula were living at 1 Allen Street, Stoke on Trent. They had the following children: Hannah Alicia YATES, George William YATES, Ursula Elizabeth YATES, Ethel Mona YATES, Harold Alcock V YATES and Leon Yardlay YATES.

Home very tired about 4:30 and had tea.

Evening - Mr. Smith, Cross Keys Inn, Tean, came up, so I went to Tean to make an inventory at his place for a sale.

This makes 17 miles of walking today - "Not so bad for me".
