FRIDAY 21st SEPTEMBER 1888
Left 31 Canton Street about 10 this morning and on to St. Pancras Station. Home via Derby via Midland Railway.
Saw Robert Plant at Blyth Bridge Station on train - he asked me about my safety pin and said he would like to have a chat with me about it.

THURSDAY 20th SEPTEMBER 1888
To Albert Docks to see Mr G. Butler embark per S.S. Aorangi for New Zealand, he is taking his wife with him back to Pleasant Point near Timaru.
We sent 2 parcels with him, one for Rose containing tea pot, cream and sugar bowls to match etc and also a parcel of draperies etc for Alma. Their ship left docks at about 1 and we watched her thro the dock.
I left Clara and Bert and came on to the city by train and saw my agents regarding agreement with Bagnall. Then to the patent office again, reading up and searching regarding treadles for sewing machines.

2) Alma was the sister of Alberta and Clara. She lived in Canterbury, New Zealand, together with their father Samuel Eccles. As far as I know, Alberta, Clara and Alma were the only surviving children.

In City, alone and searching at patent office in Chancery Lane regarding treadle. Went thro abridgements of Specification, sewing machine Treadles, Part 2 and 3. Year 1867 to 1883. Thus ranging over 16 years.

In City with Bert and took treadle crank to Inventions Office, saw Robbs. He said do not show it to Singers now but patent it in Germany first and if you get that it will show that it is a bona fide new Invention. So took treadle back to 31 Canton Street.
If you get it patented in Germany, Singers will be more willing to trade with you for the English provisional patent.

MONDAY 17th SEPTEMBER 1888
To London by train, 12 shillings each from Blyth Bridge. Clara met us at St. Pancras station and we, Bert and I, went to Clara's place, 31 Canton Street, Poplar and had tea.
After tea I started out alone and went to the Sewing Machine Exhibition, an annual affair held at the Agricultural Hall, Islington. Could not find any treadle motions like my patent. Back to Clara's about 10pm tired out.

To Ashbourne with Bert, canvassing regarding dress cutting. Got no pupils but took orders for 4 sets patterns. Went via Froghall. Home via Alton. Very tired. Canvassed Rocester in morning but found no good.

Took Children to their school treat at the field opposite Tape Shop. At Walton Villa for tea.
Mrs Alcock, late of Cheadle Eaves and now of Brighton, is at Walton Villa where she has been about a week past.

Morning - Bert went again to see Mrs Bostock at Newcastle. She has decided to take the agency for Cheadle. She brought home 10 sets of charts in evening and I met her on foot at Boundary.
I was out for Brewery at ? Dale and Freehay all the day.
Ursula (sister) came to Cheadle from Hartshill and had tea with me.
