To Newcastle with Bert. She is completing the lessons in dresscutting with Mrs Bostock. By coach to and from Blyth Bridge.
Mrs Bostock wants Bert to take an agency in Cheadle for dresscutting and to take 10 charts at 6 shillings each.

To Alton Towers Flower Show with Bert in Frank Tipper's trap? Cost about 7 shillings for the day's outing and a most miserable afternoon - rain without ceasing. Nowhere to get out of the rain at the Towers so went and sat at the Shrewsbury Arms till coach started. Bert and I went up to see Jessie Shirley but found the old man very ill.

Afternoon - Preparing music for taking to To...?
Mrs Alcock (Emma) of Cheadle Eaves and who has been living in Brighton for some time came to Walton Villa today. She had intended to stay the weekend at the Eaves but Ridge set about and abused her so she came away.
Notes:
1) Originally I thought that Emma Alcock might be a close relative of John's but it seems that she was originally Emma Burton who married a William Alcock and they lived together at a farm in Eaves Lane. I can find no connection between this William Alcock and John Alcock who wrote the diary. In the 1881 census, Emma was a widow and had her nephew James Ridge living with her. In the 1901 census, there was a widowed Emma Alcock from Cheadle who was living at Conquest Villas, Clayton, Sussex.

Morning - To Blyth Bridge by coach - train to Newcastle with Bert to see Mrs Bostock regarding agency for Cheadle for dresscutting. Bert gets the agency by taking 10 charts at 6 shillings each = 3 pounds.

Morning - Office, looking over the specifications sent me by my agents regarding safety pin. I think my patent is valid.
Afternoon - Walked to Oakamoor regarding Brewery Business - train to Alton, had tea there. Then walked home, called on Prince, Green Man, for orders but none - home about 8pm.
My application for Provisional Patent for sewing machine treadle was lodged today and numbered 12109.

Morning - Office and ?ing organette music. Mrs Holmes, Old Furnace, called and I settled with her regarding distraint and returned her jewellery but kept the cheese at 6 pence per pound.
Mrs Blurton called and I gave ger 6 more tunes, see list (must have been tunes for the organette).
Evening - I walked to Tean on Beer Business but did no trade.

Office - regarding Machine treadle revising the draft provisional specification and forwarding to Inventions Office, London, along with Cheque. 7 pounds 17 shillings and 6 pence. Also copying draft in my book.
Out on beer business took orders for 8 barrels.
Also addressing and forwarding journals of invention to manufacturers of safety pins and curtain hooks in Birmingham.

To 54 Fleet Street again and heard preliminary specification in shorthand read over to me regarding machine pedal.
Mr Castle Smith made a suggestion regarding square frame or a skeleton handle which I am to work out and send him drawing of. Agreed with Robb? as to Terms for him.
With Walter during afternoon and to Euston, left by 4pm express.
Walked from Blythe Bridge very tired. Got home at 9pm.

To 54 Fleet Street, regarding pin. Shewed them model for sewing machine pedals and then, at their suggestion, shewed same to Mr White, ? managers for Singers and ? said call as soon as my models were ready and he would send them to the factory in Scotland.

Afternoon - To Huntley toll bar on Lowndes Tricycle. Wants 10 pounds.
Evening - Walked to Kingsley to see Mrs Blurton regarding organette she had 2 weeks ago. She has sold it to Johnsons. Woodhouse and effects, to get the cash next week.

1) At a time when an engineer would be earning about 100 pounds a year, 10 pounds for a second-hand bike seems a lot of money.
2) An organette was a wind-up machine that played tunes from a paper roll with holes in it. The machine was popular before the invention of the record player around the turn of the century.

Evening - Walk with Bert to R. Plant's park to see Haymakers. Tipper finished carrying lot 1 tonight and Heath and Titterton have just started cutting lots 2 and 3.

Evening - To Howes, Teanford, where Bert has gone for tea - I started at 7pm and we had supper there - during the evening I sung 3 songs and gave great satisfaction in fact. I surprised myself. One of the Miss Howes accompanied on the piano - the songs were:
