FRIDAY 6th JANUARY 1888

Morning - To Rindle, collecting rent books and auditing them and prep(?) new rent books.

Afternoon - In market and had tea at Walton Villa.

Evening - Tomenting(?!) dad with hot flannels for over an hour and put warm flannel bandage on him for the night - dad has been very uneasy with his back to day and can only turn with difficulty. The pads give him much relief.

Met Mrs Loton(?) of Dilhorn in Market and told her she could have the trap(?) with lamps and cushions for £3.

  1. Really enjoying reading your great grandfather’s diary. It is like a window on the past. I think tomenting is probably just a mid-spelling of tormenting but there is a possibility that it is an old word related to ‘tomentum’ which is a botanical term for a dense woolly layer of hairs on a plant leaf or stem - it would make some sense in the context of covering someone with flannels
